  • Washington Defense Of Marriage Alliance

A new initiative for Washington state: WA-DOMA, I-957.

WA passed a more 'traditional' anti-gay-marriage DOMA law a while back, and court challengers failed to overturn it because gay couples can't have children, and the DOMA law specified that marriage is about procreation.

So this initiative, if passed, would mandate that all marriages which produced no children should be annulled. It also makes fertility a requirement for marriage, among other things. It's a hoot and a half.

The way we are challenging Andersen is unusual: using the initiative, we are working to put the Court’s ruling into law. We will do this through three initiatives. The first would make procreation a requirement for legal marriage. The second would prohibit divorce or legal separation when there are children. The third would make the act of having a child together the legal equivalent of a marriage ceremony.

I love politics in Washington state.

  • Ugh. What a joke.

  • The DOMA law and court ruling were jokes. This is just filling the hole they left.

This is exactly what the anti-gay-marriage people want. They've argued for it, and here it is. If they vote it down, then it's time to do away with the DOMA law.

  • They can have my happily-childless marriage when they pry it from my cold dead hands.. or something like that.

  • Marriage is either "about procreation" or it is not. Time to expose the morons.

  • Clever arguments that address the major points of hypocrisy in the arguments against gay marriage.

  • ryc: nobody really wants to talk like "that" - but, hmmm, if you can ever catch Mickybo + Me on IFC or something, you'll hear the Belfast version. From the Derry side it adds a little of that Northern English (Newcastle-ly) vowel thing. Lots of "ahghchs."

  • Laughable!  How will they address out-of-wedlock births when a woman has 3-4-5-6-10 children from as many different men?  Will she (or the men who sire multiple children with multiple partners) be bigamists?

    Fascinating bit of NON-logic.  LOL

  • That's the whole point, ride.

  • I'm a strong supporter of gay rights, including gay marriage.

This proposal is likely to turn me into an enemy of gay rights. It attacks ME, and my happy no children marriage.

    Stupid move.

  • Mark: The initiative does not attack you. The WA Supreme Court ruling attacks you, as does the DOMA law on which it was based (assuming you live in Washingtonn state). This new initiative only fills in the blanks left by the ruling. If voters reject it (which they will), then obviously the DOMA law does not actually express the will of the people of WA.
