  • Buckley vs. Chomsky

And now a blast from the past.

Once upon a time, you could turn on your TV and see an actual debate, rather than a shouting match. The show was called ‘Firing Line,’ and I was too young at the time. So were a lot of other people, apparently. So here we have civil discussion between William F. Buckley, Jr., and Prof. Noam Chomsky about the Vietnam war, among other things. This was on commercial TV. (The show eventually moved to PBS.)

    (Chomsky mops up.)

  • I remember this. He wiped the floor with Buckley as he normally does…

  • Before cable news. Buckley gets his ass kicked, but he always stayed sane. Too bad the Republican Right that followed Buckley and Goldwater never learned manners or civility.

  • Thanx! Alot of old memories there. I have seen him (Bill Buckley) in person a couple times at various college campuses. Watched the show regularly in it’s day. You are correct about real debates! Bill Buckley is still my all time favorite right wing commentator. There was no spin with him. Just a straightshooter! He was a class act, though I never (rarely, he did have some good fundamentals) agreed with him. Chomsky is always consistent.
