I’ve been re-arranging some small things in my life. I started using Chiron, a version of Mozilla for Mac OS X. It suffers a few problems that I think are universal to a lot of software under Mac OS 10.2, having to do with a lot of changes Apple made to the graphics APIs. Chiron and Mozilla and IE all three have text that disappears and reappears at random, which is rather, uh, well… Unuseable. OmniWeb is the most rock-steady of the Mac web browsers.
Anyway. That’s not why I started this ‘blog. I started it because I’ve been downloading music lately.
I found a copy of Jimmy Scott’s ‘Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child,’ which is absolutely the most.. uh.. I can’t describe it. The guy was in his 20s when he recorded it, but because he has a hormonal disorder, his voice never changed. So here’s a grown man with a feminine/child-like voice singing about being motherless. Beautiful and sad.
Also a track by Ryuichi Sakamoto, called ‘Psychedelic Afternoon.’ It’s a sort of pop bossa nova with an incredibly lush arrangement. The lyrics are by David Byrne, and are about going to a hippie commune. Sakamoto sings it, and his voice isn’t the smoothest in the world. It’s the kind of thing that makes you scratch your head.
