  • interesting homer.  but I could just as well start a website called ibelieveindinner.com.  of course everyone should be able to eat dinner!  but what can you do?

  • Just coincidently, I glanced at the newstand in my local convenience store this morning and saw a headline “What Can YOU Do to Help America?” It started me thinking about all the efforts going on to get people involved in “helping” America.

The fact is, there’s damn little that’s of any real use, and most of these efforts can do nothing but help people feel better. I don’t devalue people’s need to break out of the sense of helplessness that’s so strong right now, but symbolic actions have no substance. My own feeling is that we need to come to grips with the idea that sometimes we *are* helpless, and learn to live with that.

  • that too, though i wouldn’t go so far as to say “helpless.”  there are ways of making substantial contributions, even if it’s sending a dollar to the afghan children fund.  what’s important, i think, is to distinguish between doing things that have some impact, to those that have absolutely none.

  • Well, Homer. You got four more readers to their total of 24. Good work!

  • I think it’s cool. I mean, I really it isn’t producing a tangible result (although it MIGHT in the future), but just people sending out GOOD THOUGHTS to the Universe is never a “helpless” or BAD thing.

  • ah,it’s nice to see some people flashing that peace sign…
