  • I’ll never understand the mindset of someone who poses a question like this as “should it be?”, when the real question is “why in the hell is it not?”

  • should pot be legalized?

  • @anth0nyc – It’s no business of the state what I put into my body! Not that I put pot into it, but if I so chose, as long as I’m not “scaring the horses”, it should be no-one’s business but my own. Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us not to put sugar in our tea!

A professor of economics at a very well-respected institution recently told me “the purpose of government is to raise money to pay for government.” Given this principle, government should be completely amoral (in the proper sense of the word; a surprisingly large number of people confuse it with immoral) and tax the production, distribution and consumption of psychoactive substances. Oh…like, erm…alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.

The problem is, politicians seem to feel they have to take some sort of moral stance, pretending that what they do is for the benefit of “society”. Government should get on with maintaining security, the public infrastructure and providing genuine public “goods”. Meddling in the minutiae of people’s live is…well…immoral.
