  • Irish Kerrygold Swiss

Went grocery shopping, and found this in the shi-shi cheese case:

I didn’t know anything about the brand. I thought, ‘I wonder if it’ll amuse those Xanga people I think it might amuse.’ And since it was the only swiss cheese they had that didn’t cost more than $6, I got it.

Got home, took the picture, and did some research. It turns out that, well, no, it’s not that special, of course, I mean other than finding out that Kerrygold is a huge brand, and that at one point the Irish Dairy Board (holder of the Kerrygold and Dairygold brands) was once the largest exporter of butter in the world. But what really makes me scratch my head is this, from the description of the cheese shown in the picture above:

    Remembering the Royal Rock

Like the rest of our class-conscious European neighbors, Ireland has had its share of kings and queens. And while they’ve had numerous home addresses, no abode has had more noble homesteaders than the Rock of Cashel. The first to call this place home was the Eoghanachta clan, later known as the Munsters. They settled at Cashel around A.D. 370.

Rising 200 feet above the Irish countryside, the Rock of Cashel still cuts a foreboding figure – especially in the eyes of weary tourists. Sitting on its massive limestone base are a complete 92-foot high stone tower, a roofless abbey, and numerous other ancient fortifications.

A Swiss as Distinct as Its Past

It’s in this Imperial setting that our award-winning Swiss cheese is made. Why? Because the grasslands surrounding the Rock are still worth waging war over. The verdant pastures our dairy herds graze on are as lush as the day the Munster kings discovered them; providing rich, creamy milk for our heralded Swiss.

Dude. I just want some cheese. Now I’m waging war over pasturelands in Ireland against Swiss imperials. Or is it *for* Swiss imperials?

And.. uh… I didn’t know The Munsters were Irish.

And while we’re linking to videos….

  • Aww but how did it taste.  Have a great week end.

  • You have to understand, in Ireland everything comes with a long, complicated, story. Listening to us allows you to buy at a lower price.

And you should see the Munsters play football.

    PS. Great butter.

  • funniest comment ever.

Zappa is in their movie HEAD, too.  When people go on and on in some pretentious manner about Zappa I bring up the Monkees.  I can tell we will be friends depending on how they respond.

  • what stix said :)
