Facilitated Communication
Michael Bérubé writes a couple of ‘blogs about his adventures in Facilitated Communication with his son with Down’s Syndrome.
Also, I got ahold of a book by Temple Grandin and Sean Barron called ‘Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships: Decoding Social Mysteries Through the Unique Perspectives of Autism.’ So far, the first couple of chapters are the get-to-know-the-authors segments, and while it’s interesting to hear their stories, it’s also rather annoying, mostly because I haven’t been as successful as they have. I want theory and lists and stuff like that, not an example of someone who’s done better than me in a shorter time.

interesting blog…
Have you seen the material by Dr. Steve Gutstein and his RDI (relationship development intervention) program? It’s reportedly groundbreaking and has by far the highest rate of success (whatever that means, really) with ASDs.
The website. I highly suggest this book — the first half was very enlightening, AS or no AS. It truly was an amazing read.
Dr. Gutstein was the doc that gave me the diagnosis. He’s a nice guy, very bright, very much able to relate to adults with AS/autism/whatever.
RDI looks much more useful for children than adults, though. The last time I talked to Dr. Gutstein, he said he was trying to retool it for adults, so they wouldn’t feel like they were doing childish stuff.
‘Solving The Relationship Puzzle’ is a good book. I’ll have to dig that out again and compare to the Grandin/Barron book.
I also saw a book at the store called ‘Autism and the God Connection,’ which instantly annoyed me. I think I’ll write another ‘blog about that, but not until after I’ve checked it out from the library and at least skimmed it.
