  • In a recent 'blog, lionne bemoaned the low state of affairs in rap music.

And even though I agree with a lot of what she's saying, I thought I'd introduce Exhibit A in the not-all-rap-is-so-bad court of public opinion. And here it is:

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy tryin' not to be 'Famous and Dandy (Just Like Amos and Andy).'

You'll recall that Amos and Andy were two white guys pretending to be black, who had a radio show and then later a TV show where they performed in blackface.

(Yup.. I was wrong about the blackface. I've failed black history month.)

  • When it went to TV, the white guys who popularized the show were dropped like dirty kleenex in favor of black guys, as I remember.

  • blackface don't mean much on radio.

  • i think psychology can measure some form of "quality of life," happiness and sadness are things that show up in the brain.  so, while psychology can't explain the difference between existing and being alive, and can show different moods associated w/ being alive.

  • looking forward to whatever comes of your 2hr rant on psychology.  i've also recently heard of something called gestault therapy, which i know 0 about except the person i heard about it from is very holistic and i'm guessing it's not your traditional kind of counseling.

i just wanted to make sure you knew that i agree 100% w/ where you're coming from w/ regards to education, i was merely pointing out the system as it's traditionally known, w/ the teacher passing on knowledge, that's not at all the system i believe in.

the reason i brought up psychology, was to make the point that education should be about developing a person, rather than focussing only on material.  it should be about drawing lessons from our existence.  i agree w/ you, i think psychology should be about providing lessons, not just explaining things.  the book i'm reading, "flow," both explains what leads to positive mental states as well as showing us how we can achieve these states.

  • Boy my old Mac just will not play that MP3. I want to amend that I don't think all rap is bad. The post was kind of tongue in cheek, although that particular set of lyrics by 50 Cent was pretty hard core. NickyJett sent me some lyrics by him that were much more to my liking later (check back to the comments on that blog). I guess my main impression of most rap is that it concentrates on sex and violence, while there are so many more levels to life.

  • I think it's funny that you argue in defense of rap music, and have to dig up a 13-year-old obscure (even then) recording as an example.

...Worry not, I couldn't cite anything more recent either.... so what was you argument?

  • The argument's in the song, d00d.
