Update: Defeat homophobia, with showtunes!
Jimmy Swaggart's in the news again. This time he admitted that if a gay man looked at him wrong, he'd kill that gay man and lie to God about it. And his congregation laps it right up.
I used to bitch and moan about how Christians were ruining this country, and I think that's because I grew up in the south, where crap like this isn't nearly so far under the surface of normal society. People would tell me I was cynical, and I probably was, but I also think they were in a kind of denial.
I doubt we'll hear an apology from Swaggart about this. Swaggart, it should be noted, was once found in a hotel room with a hooker. But if you cry on TV and say you're sorry, there are enough people who will keep sending you money to transform the whole sorry episode into a faded memory, and you can go back to the business of hate speech disguised as the word of God.

LOL! We used to call him Cry Baby Jimmy. Hell, he was crying to get money long before he made a deposit in that condom. He never touched the hooker. She was too far beneath him for that. He just watched her while he masturbated. And he only got caught after he turned Jim Baker in for his air-conditioned dog house, et al. Who would care about an apology from him? God is the only one could deal with people like that. Christians aren't perfect. They're just forgiven. At least that's what the bumper sticker says. Boy, is he in for a surprise?
At the time, I was following the whole spate of TV-preacher-caught-with-pants-down episodes in the late '80s. It seemed like they were all getting caught and then, through sheer force of smug charisma, were able to rebuild some kind of congregation around themselves.
The really scary part had to do with the fact that these churches were basically propaganda arms of the Republican party in the south. Churches have always had political aspects, but we're talking about industrialized politics here. The churches made huge money by selling their mailing lists to the Republicans, who in turn begged for money through those lists. The churches were, of course, tax-exempt, so there were (and still are) a lot of right-wing business connections made through them.
It's still going on, but they learned their lessons from the late '80s and have refined their methods.
hey, i liked your answer... i didnt think of that one
Swaggart also offered to pay for sex with the hooker's 12-year-old daughter.
Ya know, he's entitled to a hooker. Not against that at all. But... to preach against it? Then cry and ask God's forgiveness? Pfff. I-D-I-O-T.
But now, with the whole new twist on the potential gay murder, how do you handle someone like that? Someone who ADMITS that he could kill someone in cold blood just because he is different? I mean, that is INSANE, not just IDIOTIC anymore.
Sigh.
Frightening! I actually have a copy of Penthouse out in the garage somewhere (my late hubby used to collect selected issues) that has photos of the hooker Jim-Bob hooked up with. Eewuuu. Very hairy lady from my recollection. LOL.
Ugh. You know how, after 9/11, Bush said not to judge all Muslims based on the nuts who fly planes into buildings full of innocent people? Well, the same rule applies for Swaggert/Falwell/televangelists in general and Christianity. And double for those foul Left Behind books. You only hear from these nuts so much because the more moderate Christian churches are losing members.
Two eprops well earned.
This is very disturbing stuff but it's good to know. Especially the part about the republican party using people like this guy as tools to bring in money. It explains how people canbe duped into thinking Bush is a christian or that he is on the level. If they think this guy is legit they will believe anything.
