  • I want one of these.

Also, from the Washington Monthly, a really good essay on the flight of the creative class from the US.

It's got a Lord of the Rings tie-in... Basically, Peter Jackson sucked Hollywood dry. It seems Americans working in highly technical creative jobs find it hard to return to George W. Bush's US after spending three years in New Zealand making LotR.

I just got back from Las Vegas, where I met a small number of the folks working on the Cirque Du Soleil's 'O' production, and most of them were from other countries (including Mexico. Hi, Marco!). The US likes to think of itself as drawing the best of the best from around the world towards itself, but that trend is reversing. In fact, Cirque is based in Canada, and is taking over Las Vegas. The most successful shows on the strip are in some way related to the Cirque, and in fact, the 'O' theater was built before the hotel/casino which surrounds it, The Bellagio.

  • Being a New Zealander, who spent her 20's living and working in Wellington, I'd go back there in a flash if I could!

  • I enjoyed "O" but not nearly as much as the folks who went with me. I dunno. I get sensory-overload sometimes and there was just waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much stuff going on, in ALL PARTS of the stage, and ALL TIMES during the show. I couldn't ever really focus on ONE THING. Drove me nuts.

Lots of talented folks working there, though. TONS. Glad you got to meet some of 'em! Sounds fun.

  • Oh, and I can't say I'd want a dodecahedron home, but... hey. I'd come visit YOU at any rate.

  • that house is cool.... I'll actually be building one of these, hopefully within the next 12 months... it's not guaranteed to float or fend off The Bomb, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper, and about 4 times the living space!

  • For what it's worth, the scuttlebutt is that there will be a new Cirque show taking the place of the almost certainly cancelled forever Sigfried and Roy show.

Before long, every show with be from the mind of Guy Laliberté.
