  • Just watched most of the Mel Gibson ‘Hamlet.’ Much better than the tedious Kenneth Brannagh one.

Yes, now we know the answer to the question: What do Jerry Bruckheimer and William Shakespeare have in common? ‘Hamlet: Lethal Weapon 5′

  • I was pleasantly horrified by just how good Mel Gibson is in that movie. I still shudder when I think of how I’ve had to reevaluate my loathing of him.

  • Quite a humourous blog. Aside from the Lethal Weapon stint, I enjoy Mel Gibson. *shrug*

  • I KNOW!  I think his soliliquey was better than Jacoby’s!  I nearly wet myself.

  • I think Gibson plays the insanity very well in his version, all that wide-eyed head bobbing he does.

I can’t even remember the Brannagh version, actually, except that the “update” to such a sparkling 19th Century setting bored me.

The recent Ethan Hawke version, with Tom Sheppard is pretty good.

The best I’ve ever seen, though, is a BBC production with Kevin Kline and Patrick Stewart. Hard to find, but soooooo good. Done as a stage play for the screen on a very minimalist set suggested mainly by drapery. Cool overhead shots, too.

  • Oh, and who could forget the Tim Roth & Gary Oldman version of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead???

  • Did you recognize Patrick Stewart as Sejanus in I Claudius?
